Grapevine Coast

There's a walk on a line
By the grapevine coast
Where the rocks don't cut your feet
But they pillow your steps
As you walk over
Foggy banks of the spring retreat
It's a stone away
But away from sight
Can be heard in a moment's time
You can sharpen ears
Of corn on the breeze
As it ripples through the climbs
You're a step ahead
And you glance behind
See the flowers glistening proud
It's a lonely day
You're so far away
Walking stones above the clouds

Stolen Car

Middle of the road
Is where I ran out of gas
I spent too much on fuel
And didn't get my money's worth
I got this car ten days ago
But it isn't really mine
I stole it from my cousin
On my day of birth
I took it to the station
Where nobody asks for registration
It already had ten thousand miles
So nobody really cared
Well that was all ten days ago
And it left me in a bind
I never made it to the sticks
And now I'm broken down and scared
It was all well understood
It was a gift for me
It was kinda from my cousin
Though I didn't catch his name
The whole family stood around
In a conversation matinee
They're all respectively rich
But their money's all the same

Winter Bird
03:39
|

In the early hours of the morning
I'm on the long highway
Many miles between my many homes
The sun is rising on another day
I almost had a girl in Carolina
Another up in cold Sault Ste. Marie
But I am bound to the devil's highway
And I'm gone before the morning dawns on me
I've been out here many a long winter
Cruising like a winter bird on wing
I'll settle down soon as the wind stops blowing
And curl up in the ageless wedding ring
In the early hours of the morning
I'm on the long highway
Many miles between my many homes
The sun is rising on another day

Winter Birds
10:22
|

Once again I'm feeling out of my time
Like something's missing from the air
I need a quarter but I haven't got a dime
Don't feel I'm going anywhere
Look out the window at a rainy day
I'm hearing someone else's song
I think of pictures that have faded away
I put the lovesick kettle on
I saw you standing at the lonesome water
On a lonesome rainy day
I only knew you as your father's daughter
I didn't know you had been raised that way
I'm hearing echoes of the passenger cars
On the other side of town
Winter birds are flying like messenger stars
Snow is covering the ground
Once again I'm feeling out of my time
Like something's missing from the air
Winter birds are flying through my mind
Cold and windy way up there
