Lost At Sea 23:13
Buried Gardens on Canyon Hill Is where I last saw snow There was a hanging bridge in the air And dark clouds hanging low It was early in the afternoon You were walking up ahead of me When the trees began to turn and sway I remembered I was lost at sea I remembered I was lost at sea Sable Island on the edge of the shelf Was the last time I saw land Suddenly faces appeared in the wind Across the winter desert sand It was late in the afternoon When the ocean began to grow A white squall appeared from the south And I was fighting the undertow I was fighting the undertow Carolina, Carolina It's good to see you It's good to see you I'm afraid of the ocean at night All of the leagues below I'm drifting in a fading canoe Dissolving in the current flow Dissolving in the current flow My head is spinning, my memory's gone I don't know how this began I see the water beginning to glow It looks like sugary sand It looks like sugary sand I see a place where I'm born again Everything is moving so slow I think I want to step overboard And lie on the sugary snow And lie on the sugary snow PK © 2 VIII 98

about

Lost At Sea spans the full 23 minute length of tape #48. The guitars and singing were recorded at my brother's apartment in a high rise on Christie St. on Thursday, August 13th, 1998. Vava's on acoustic guitar and sings on the bridge. He was strumming so hard for so long that his fingers were bleeding by the end. I went home at overdubbed the drums and bass the next day in the basement at 228 Parliament St. The lyric was written on Sunday, August 2nd, 1998 and I was happy with how dreamlike they sounded and also how cohesive they seemed. I was writing pages and pages of lyrics then, but it was so hard to get anything good. A lot of searching. Also, it wasn't often that it seemed I could get the music to really fit the lyric. I think it does that well here and I remember feeling pretty satisfied with how this one turned out. This recording is special for me for the way my brother and I were jamming together, all the highs and lows. It felt like we really hit on something and we both felt exhilarated at the end. Looking back, I wonder how it was possible that the neighbours didn't complain, or maybe we were oblivious. It was an apartment building, after all.
